Many associate aviation photography to be something which can only be undertaken in the light of day, however a recent influx of events has seen night photo-shoots surge in popularity among aviation photographers.
One of the oldest examples of these events in the UK is the Northolt Nightshoots, with the most recent being the 23 rd such event, held at the West London Royal Air Force station.
Over the years, Northolt's photo-shoots have attracted aircraft from all over Europe, both from civil and military operators, with past types in attendance including the Swedish Air Force’s North American Sabreliner, and Securite Civile’s Grumman Tracker fire-bombers.
Whilst the aircraft are the stars, such events provide a real challenge from a photographic perspective, such as working out white balances to compensate for the artificial light colour-cast, which changes with each aircraft, being one of the larger issues faced.
Aircraft present at the 23 rd photo-shoot included an Apache and Lynx from the Army Air Corps, a pair of French Air Force Embraer Xingu’s, and a Belgian Police MD902 Explorer. A big thanks has to go to Phillip Dawe and his team for organising the event once again and bringing together such selection of types on a rain-threatened October evening.
Below is a set of images from the latest event, which despite the challenge of occasional rain and a stiff breeze, lived up to expectations.
